Why are we using the Board as well?
- The boards are easy for him to access as they are always at his eye level. This also helps the family to understand that they should be thinking
from child’s perspective and how he sees things.
- He is reminded that he has options thereby encouraging more frequent requests.
- It will reduce the chances of the child being told no when he requests an items he can't have. This is because Parents are able to remove pictures
quickly
- With other pictures on the board he would eventually understand that he has other options. I think Nicholas believes that when he asks for things it
is a black and white situation (after he makes a request he is either with or without something);
- He will diversify the collection of items he asks for. It was common that Nicholas would only ask for the same things because they were so desirable
(iPad and lollipop primarily). I do believe that all pictures should be available in an ideal situation. But, it seemed to be causing a problem.
- The length of Nicholas' interactions with his parents/family will extend. It has been reported that they believed he can make requests for what he
wants at home. He requests verbally and through use of the PECS book. He therefore gets the "cause and effect" of this exchange.
The boards were created to extend the length of an exchange and improve joint attention as there is no better time to catch the opportunity as
when he is asking for what he wants and his highly motivated.
* Note that this is not the same as placing a demand on him as he was previously trained to do (i.e. say ball and you get the lollipop). This is more
of an acknowledgement of what he wants, encouraging eye contact, emphasizing the sequence of pics, and building trust between Nicholas and
his parents (I feel he has such a negative association with why and how he receives what he wants since a demand was frequently placed on him
in order for him to get what he wanted)
