Should I use the PECS book or the Boards?
The answer is: use both
I encourage use of the PECS book at home. But, it is difficult for the PECS book can not be in a stationary location. I have found that even if it is and lets say the child is in the basement, he most likely would not go upstairs to the kitchen to get a picture from his book.
The boards were created to be used in addition to the PECS book. Their purpose:
1) To increase the number of interactions with the family through his use of PECS
2) To show him/remind him of some options of what he can ask for
3) To increase the use of visual aides at home as they provide guidance and a sense of structure for the child. This is often something desperately needed at home.
The boards are not a replacement for the book. I always encourage use of the PECS book.
